Flynn tabbed as DPHS football head coach/assistant AD

To lead its future, the Deer football program has turned to its not-so-distant past. Austin Flynn, a former standout quarterback for the Deer, has been tabbed as the new head coach/assistant athletic director. Flynn was the lone finalist for the position.

Austin Flynn 3FLYNNMonday night, the Deer Park ISD Board of Trustees unanimously named Austin Flynn head coach of the Deer Park High School football program. Flynn, a 2002 Deer Park High School graduate, returns to coach the team that he once led on the field as its quarterback.

Flynn has spent most of his career at the collegiate level, working most recently as offensive coordinator for Grand View University in Iowa, a position he has held since 2012. During his tenure there, he helped lead the team to five consecutive playoff appearances, seven conference championships, and the 2013 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national championship. He was named 2016 assistant coach of the year. Flynn joined the Grand View staff in 2011 as defensive backs coach.

He began his coaching career in 2007 as varsity wide receivers and defensive backs coach at South Houston High School in Pasadena ISD.

As a player, Flynn exceled at DPHS. He was a four-year letterman at Iowa State University, where he switched to receiver. He was the team’s leading receiver in 2005.

In 2007, Flynn earned his bachelor of science degree in sports management from Iowa State University. He received his master of educational leadership degree from Lamar University in 2011.

Flynn replaces the longest-serving head football coach in school history, Chris Massey, who recently announced his retirement.
