One of the region's fastest growing and most popular bicycle rides is set for Feb. 25, 2017. The Texas Independence Bicycle Tour powered by Shell Deer Park winds through Deer Park, the Bay Area and the historic San Jacinto Monument. Registration and ride sponsorship are underway.
The Deer Park Rotary Club will host its eight annual Texas Independence Bicycle Tour powered by Shell Deer Park Feb. 25. The bike tour is a sanctioned warm up ride for the upcoming MS 150 in the spring.
Already in its eighth year, the ride is regarded as one of the more popular and safer rides in the training circuit. The Texas Independence Bicycle Tour features three routes each approximately 30, 48 or 62 miles in length, that wind through the historic southeast region of Harris County and loops around the San Jacinto Monument.
The ride begins and ends at Clyde Abshier Stadium at the Deer Park High School South Campus. Light snacks will be served in the morning during registration beginning at 6 a.m. Lunch will be served as riders arrive from their routes.
Registration is $35 through Feb. 11, and then jumps to $40 until Feb. 24. Onsite registration is $45. Riders can pick any of the three routes regardless of registration costs. To register, get more information or become a sponsor, visit http://portal.clubrunner.ca/3925
Proceeds from the ride go to the Deer Park Rotary Club’s scholarships and charitable endeavors including help to non-profit organizations, scholarships and addressing community needs.
This year’s ride is approximately 30 days closer to the world-famous MS 150 ride than past years.
“We were hoping to move the date closer to the big ride than previous years,” said Casey McGuire, Rotarian and ride director. “With the later date, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for better weather and an even bigger turnout.”
McGuire said in past years, participation in the Texas Independence Bicycle Tour’s ride has steadily grown despite cold, damp, windy January mornings.
Sponsorships are also available. Since the inception of the ride, Shell Deer Park has been a generous sponsor of the Texas Independence Bicycle Tour; and since 2012, Shell partnered with the Deer Park Rotary Club as the ride’s title sponsor.
“We are honored to serve as the title sponsor for the 2017 tour,” said Barry Klein, the general manager of Shell Deer Park’s Refinery & Chemical Plant. “The tour provides cyclists from all over the Houston area with a unique opportunity to come together and experience some of Texas’ rich history while also strengthening the local community. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!”
The Deer Park Rotary Club agrees.
“Shell Deer Park has been a tremendous partner to the Deer Park community for many, many years,” said Beckie Stockstill-Cobb, president of the Deer Park Rotary Club. “To have our neighbor as the title presenting sponsor of our ride makes our club and the Texas Independence Bicycle Tour shine brighter.”
Not only has Shell Deer Park stepped up as the ride’s title sponsor, for many years, the facility had active membership in Deer Park Rotary. Jim Overman, the refinery business manager at Shell Deer Park’s Refinery & Chemical Plant represents Shell in the Rotary Club.
“We are a proud member of Deer Park’s Rotary Club since it strives to improve the quality of life for Deer Park residents and supports critical causes around the globe,” said Jim Overman. “At Shell Deer Park, we’re deeply committed to giving back and powering progress in the communities surrounding our site.”
