DP man starts fundraiser to buy Rockets, but has donation plans in mind

Moments after Houston Rockets’ owner Les Alexander announced he was putting the NBA franchise for sale, speculation on a prospective buyer’s list has begun. While some of the Bayou City’s wealthiest entrepreneurs are rumored to be in the market for the team, one Deer Park man has tossed his hat into the ring. Through a GoFundMe account, Bennie Boles will either gather funds to purchase the Rockets or make a donation to the 100 Club.

The Art Park Players open Shrek the Musical Friday at the Theater Courts Building. The musical comedy inspired by the novel and award-winning animated film runs through July 22.

Public invited to West family reception July 3

Simeon West founded the city of Deer Park in 1892, making 2017 Deer Park’s 125th anniversary.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, The Friends of Deer Park Public Library are hosting a reception to honor the living heirs of Simeon West. Great-great grandsons, Doug Etherton, Eugene Etherton, and Jim Etherton, along with great-great granddaughters, Lori Neisler and Charlotte Tyrrell will be in attendance for a meet-and-greet at the library.

The reception is open to the public and will be held from 11 AM-12:30 PM on Monday, July 3, 2017 in the Deer Park Public Library meeting room. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. The library is located at 3009 Center St.

Independence 5K, Patriot mile to benefit Wounded Warrior Project

Have you signed up for the Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Independence 5K, 10K Run/Walk & Kid’s Patriotic Mile?

This Saturday, July 1, join your community for a special event in honor of our nation’s Independence Day. Pre-registration will continue through Friday, June 30, reopening on the day of the race at 6AM.

Following the event, the department will be donating a portion of the event proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project.

“We are so excited for this year’s Independence 5K, and we can’t wait to see everyone at the Deer Park Community Center to take part in the event,” said Nicole Garvis, Marketing/Technical Coordinator for the department. “This event is a great way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend, celebrate our nation’s independence and contribute to a great cause!”

Pre-registration is $20 for the 5K Run/Walk, $30 for the 10K Run/Walk and $10 for the Kid’s Patriotic Mile. On race day, registration will be $5 extra for each race.

On Saturday, following pre-registration, the Independence 10K will begin at 7:15AM, the 5K will begin at 7:30 AM and the Patriotic Mile will begin at 8:30AM.

City rededicates Tiffany Amber Park

The renovations in the city’s parks continued Tuesday with the rededication of Tiffany Amber Park. Mayor Jerry Mouton, members of city council and two state representatives were on hand to ceremonially open the small neighborhood park off X Street.
