Library to host discussion on Christmas' bad guy

Written by InsideDP.com staff. Posted in Community

KrampusIf good boys and girls are visited by Santa Claus, who comes to see the naughty kids? According to traditions in Austria and Germany, a strange figure named Krampus is said to arrive to punish the children who misbehave. On Friday, Dec. 16, Professor Art Fitz-Gerald will discuss the real history of the Krampus character and the unusual Christmas traditions in Europe’s Alpine region. The program will begin at 11 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.

The tradition of the Krampus dates back hundreds of years. His name is derived from the German word for “claw.” Over time, the tradition has spread to other countries in Europe making its way south to Switzerland and as far east as Hungary and Slovenia. Krampus has recently started to appear in American media, being referenced on General Hospital, Grimm and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. A Hollywood movie based on the character was released in 2015.
