The Deer Park Education Foundation has set April 29 for the annual Shell Strides for Schools Fun Run. Proceeds from the eighth annual 5K and sponsorships fund teacher grants for innovative and enriching curriculum and programing.

A gift from Shell Deer Park to the Deer Park Education Foundation has become the gift that keeps on giving.

The eighth annual Strides for Schools 5K Fun Run benefiting the Deer Park Education Foundation is set for April 29. The run begins and ends near the home side of Clyde Abshier Stadium at 8 a.m. Registration fees and information is available by clicking here.

Jennifer Torres, DEPF director, said the fun run has grown into a community event for Deer Park ISD schools.

“It is a huge outreach that encompasses the whole community and Deer Park families,” she said. “It has become a community and family day.”

The 2016 Strides for Schools Fun Run attracted an unprecedented number of race participants and sponsors — breaking the previous year’s record for dollars raised for the Deer Park Education Foundation. More than 2,000 runners and walkers signed up for this all-community fundraiser to raise money in support of the teachers and students of Deer Park. Last year’s event brought in $153,000 for the Foundation.

Last year’s event had more than 2,400 paid participants, marking steady growth over the years.

“It was exciting when we went over 2,000 participants and it keeps growing. It’s great to see the schools clubs get involved and participate, knowing that 100 percent goes back to the teachers.”

The Deer Park Education Foundation funds teacher grants to purchase innovative curriculum that brings textbook pages to life. These learning tools are often outside of the school budget.

The fun run was a gift to the Education Foundation by then Shell Deer Park General Manager Aamir Farid to celebrate the plant’s 80th anniversary in the city. Through the partnership between Shell and the Foundation, the Strides for Schools Fun Run has become the largest single annual fundraiser for the Foundation.

“We’re so grateful for Shell’s partnership. They started this for us and they created an event where the community gathers to support the Foundation,” Torres said.

Shell underwrites the expenses for the event and matches the entry fees dollar for dollar. All proceeds benefit the Deer Park Education Foundation.

“They have been so kind and generous to the Foundation,” said Torres.

After the fun run, there will be a small after party at the stadium with vendors, inflatables and other booths for participants to enjoy while waiting for other runners and race results.

“This is a chipped and timed 5K, but you don’t have to be a competitive runner to participate,” Torres said. “We have families and groups that run and walk together, pushing strollers. It’s all about the community coming together for a great cause.”
