The Lady Deer basketball team got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 56-40 win at home over Santa Fe on Thursday in non-district action. The team returns to 22-6A play when Deer Park hosts Sam Rayburn Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Watkins Gym.
Thirteen proved to be a lucky number for the Deer basketball team. The team notched its 13th consecutive victory with a 54-42 win over defending district champion South Houston to open 22-6A play. Next up for the Deer is a road game at Sam Rayburn Friday at 7 p.m.
Deer Park Football Head Coach Chris Massey announced his retirement this week, capping a 38-year coaching career. Although Massey leaves the program with the most wins in Deer Park history with 92. He said he was appreciative of the school’s and community’s support over his 14 years with the Deer.
The first quarter started out shaky for the Lady Deer, with turnovers plaguing their offense and allowing Memorial to gain an advantage. However, Deer Park utilized free throws as well as 4 points from freshman starting guard Enriqua Bellow (11 pts, 6 rebounds, 5 steals) to keep the score within 3 points.
This hard playing did not go unnoticed, and Lady Deer Senior post Mikayla Bush noted how well the underclassmen are contributing to this team. "They work hard in practice and we're all coming together really well when we play. When you have young talent like that it's good to use it and I think as long as we all do our jobs we can have a good season," said Bush.
Coming off the 2017 season, several members of the Deer football team earned season honors. The All-District 22-6A team is headlined by defense MVP Race Moser and Coach of the Year Chris Massey. Twenty Deer were named all-district, including four unanimous selections.
Another weekend, another set of wins for the Deer basketball team. Deer Park is riding an 11-game winnings streak heading into Tuesday’s final predistrict match up against Angleton. Although team confidence is high, the Deer are focused on improving in what could be another dogfight in 22-6A.
